What Publishers Need to Know about EUDR
The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to take effect on December 30, 2025, with smaller companies given until June 30, 2026 to comply. This regulation will require that all products containing wood, including book, are deforestation-free and produced in compliance with the laws of their country of origin.
For mid- to large-sized publishers selling into the European market, now is the time to get systems, documentation, and sourcing practices in place.
What the EUDR Means for Publishers
Publishers selling into the EU must now:
- Prove that paper used in books is from deforestation-free supply chains.
- Provide documentation that meets EU compliance standards.
- Track sourcing information closely in coordination with print partners and suppliers.
How CHG is Preparing
At Color House Graphics, we source paper exclusively from FSC and SFI-certified mills. Both organizations are preparing their systems to meet EUDR requirements for low- and standard-risk supply chains, and are expected to play a key role in simplifying compliance.
We are in close communication with our paper suppliers to ensure all required documentation will be in place ahead of the deadline. If additional guidelines are issued – such as geo-location data requirements from paper mills – we’ll adapt quickly and keep our customers informed.
What’s Still Evolving
While many aspects of the EUDR are finalized, some remain subject to change, including:
- Final classification of supplier countries as low, standard, or high risk.
- Specific geo-location and traceability requirements.
- Potential rule refinements ahead of the deadline.
How Publishers Can Prepare Now
If your books are likely to be sold into the EU:
- Choose FSC or SFI-certified papers for EU-bound titles.
- Maintain detailed records of paper sourcing.
- Stay in close communication with your CHG representative for the latest updates.
The December 30, 2025 EUDR compliance deadline may still feel months away, but early preparation will ensure a smooth transition. With printing, binding, eBook conversions, and fulfillment under one roof, CHG can help you navigate compliance requirements while keeping your projects on schedule.
